Les premiers timbres émises par les États-Unis après l'autorisation du Congress par le décret du 3 Mars 1847, sont mis à la vente le 1er juillet 1847. "Le cinq cents brun et le dix cents noir".
Le cinq cents brun représente le profil de Benjamin Franklin, un homme politique et l'un des "pères fondateurs".
Le dix cents noir représente le premier président des États-Unis George Washington, en dessous du portait la valeur de dix cents est en chiffre romain.

The first stamps used in the United States, "in denominatios of five and ten cents". Were used for distribution throught the country, after the Congress provided for the issunce of this stamps by passing an Act in March 3, 1847. The official use was on July 1, 1847 in New York city, with Boston and other cities the following days.

The first adhesive postage stamp, the five cent red brown (With other shades) features a profile of Benjamin Franklin. The ten cent value stamp was black depicting George Washington, the denomination of the ten cent was in the romain letter X. Both the five cent and ten cent stamps were imperforated.
