The 1 cent Z grill depicting Benjamin Franklin. The design of this stamps were common in the 1860s the grill was added in February 1868 to prevent the reus of stamps by washing out the cancellation marks. the grilling was to permet better absorption of the ink into the stamp.
The 1 cent Z grill is a blue stamp features a profile of Benjamin Franklin in white. Produced in 1868 with perforation. There are two known 1 cent Z grill, the first one is owned by the New York Public Library. The other one is owned by a private collector. In October 2005 Bill Gross a collector traded a block of four Inverted Jenny stamps for the 1 cent Z grill. the estimated value of the stamp is nearly 3 million dollar.
