The 5 pound Orange 1882 stamp



The 5 pound postage stamp was issued in 1882 to cover the cost of sending legthy telegrams after it was decided that all telegrams fees should be paid in with postage stamps. This stamp is a stamp that wasn't actually needed for postal purposes. The designe of the stamp is similar to the one issued in 1877, the plate was adapted by removing the word "TELEGRAPHS" and printing the word "POSTAGE", as two stage printing, POSTAGE can often be out of alignement and in a different shade of orange. The usage of the stamp lasted for over 20 years.
